Ethos West & the JJQ play Ron Holleman's Shambhala Suite & other neat stuff

Jazz, classical, and a synthesis of both. The centerpiece is Ron Holleman's joyful Shambhala Suite, a five-movement work for string quartet and jazz quintet inspired by Buddhist themes.

The CD leads off with Bob's One Song, a funky original tune by JJQ/Ethos West pianist Bob Montgomery that gives the JJQ a chance to let their hair down.

Cellist Becky Kutz Osterberg is featured next on Vivaldi's Concerto in C Minor.

Then Ethos West's full string orchestra is showcased on the third movement of the rarely performed Suite for Strings by British composer Frank Bridge.

Finally, the Ethos West string quartet and the Just Jazz Quintet combine forces for the five movements of the Shambhala Suite:
Dharma Bums, The Road to Enlightenment, Waltz for Sue, Skydance for Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche, and Sakyong Samba.

Recorded in 2008 at the Ethos West Spring Concert and UNC Recording Studio.

CD for sale at Ethos West concerts and JJQ gigs - $12 each

Individual selections also available as MP3s
on iTunes, Amazon, etc. - 99¢ each

"...This CD is delightfully diverse.... The playing is superb. The selections and pacing of the album is nice. The original pieces stand as bookends for the classics.
And the Shambhala Suite serves as quite a finale. It’s performed by both the jazz quintet and string players. The jazz motors forward and interacts with the almost spiritual undertones of the strings. It's a very swingy upbeat composition. I think that the album as a whole details the variety and skill of professional musicianship that can be found in Northern Colorado. Also, I have to note, this is probably the only CD in town that has a conch playing on it, only going to show that you conch go wrong with this album!"

"The CD is magnificent. I love the quality of the recording as well as the variety of music. Who found that Buddha on the CD cover? What a stitch!"
-- Scott R., Boston

"I finally had a chance to sit down and listen to the new CD. Very very tasty! Every bit of it, and a nice mix of stuff... Excellent group!"
-- Mike N., Wisconsin

"Terrific CD!! Loved the strings, solos, WRITING... Especially enjoyed the slow writing in the Shambhala... Man, that string section plays well... Great sound; must be a terrific sound guy."
-- Steve D., Missouri
