Concert Schedule

Ethos West, a professional-level northern Colorado chamber orchestra, was founded by Dr. Ron Holleman in 2003 and presented its inaugural season in 2004-2005.

The orchestra offers two or three concerts a year covering a uniquely wide-ranging repertoire and regularly including premieres of new works.

Ethos West programs not only span the full range of traditional chamber orchestra works (renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary), but also include jazz, third-stream (a blend of jazz and classical), and world music. Only John Lewis' Orchestra USA of the early 1960s and Holleman's Chicago-based Ethos Chamber Orchestra (1982-96) precede Ethos West in regularly offering such a wide and varied repertoire.

Besides the imaginative selections of music, a favorite feature at Ethos West concerts is Ron Holleman's informal, often amusing "verbal program notes" that help put the music in context and make the concerts friendly and accessible.

Our most recent concert was a very successful joint appearance with the wonderful Laudamus Chamber Chorale on April 26, 2009. (As with all our concerts, you can see its program in the Archives.) That collaboration was so much fun for both groups that we'll probably be doing it again next year.

Meanwhile, our regular Fall Concert is coming up in September 2009. See below for more details as they become available.

CLASS BRASS: Joyful Music for Brass Choirs, from Renaissance to Jazz

Orchestral music isn't just about strings – great composers have written an astonishing variety of works for the brass instruments, alone and together.

In this concert, Ethos West will feature a sampling of brass music from different periods and genres, from a lovely polychoral Renaissance work by Gabrieli, to Classical and Romantic works showcasing different instrumental combinations, to some rousing 20th century Third-Stream and, as always with Ethos, some jazz.

What it all has in common is the exhilarating character of brass music. Come and be stirred, inspired, and uplifted!

2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 27, 2009
Rialto Theater

228 E. 4th Street, Loveland, CO
