Ethos West, a professional-level northern Colorado chamber orchestra, was founded by Dr. Ron Holleman in 2003 and presented its inaugural season in 2004-2005.
The orchestra offers two or three concerts a year covering a uniquely wide-ranging repertoire, and regularly premieres new works.
Ethos West programs not only span the full range of traditional chamber orchestra works (renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary), but also include jazz, third-stream (a blend of jazz and classical), and world music. Only John Lewis' Orchestra USA of the early 1960s and Holleman's Chicago-based Ethos Chamber Orchestra (1982-96) precede Ethos West in regularly offering such a wide and varied repertoire.
Besides the imaginative selections of music, a favorite feature at Ethos West concerts is Ron Holleman's informal, often amusing "verbal program notes" that help put the music in context and make the concerts friendly and accessible.
Our most recent concert was on May 23, 2010, at Griffin Concert Hall in Fort Collins. Called "The Romance of Dance", it showcased dance-related music from the Renaissance through 20th-century jazz and featured a suite of Astor Piazzolla tangos in a new arrangement by violin phenom James Anderson. According to audience response, people loved it!
We hope you'll come join us for our next concert in October 2010 at the Rialto Theater in Loveland. Continuing our tradition of interesting themes, this one will be a look at humor in orchestral music.
"Why So Serious?"
2:00 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010 – Rialto Theater
228 E. 4th Street, Loveland
Who says orchestral music has to be earnest? Come laugh with composers in their lighter moments as Ethos West samples three centuries of musical satire and fun, including parodies by favorite 19th and 20th century humor pioneers and some present-day jazzy classics.
It's too soon to know the exact program, but these will probably be included:
• Leopold Mozart's Toy Symphony
• P.D.Q. Bach
• Anna Russell
• Tom Lehrer
• Corky Siegel's Op. 14
• Dave Frishberg
